What to do in Prague

Staying at Hotel Prague City puts you a short walk or a single tram ride from nearly everything worth seeing in Prague. Here is our reception team's honest guide — the famous sights, the local Žižkov secrets, and how long each takes from our front door.

The classics

The sights everyone comes for

The Astronomical Clock on Prague Old Town Square

Old Town Square & Astronomical Clock

The heart of medieval Prague: the 600-year-old Astronomical Clock, Týn Church and a maze of cobbled lanes. Go early morning or after dusk to have it almost to yourself.

25 min walk · or a short tram ride
Domes and towers by Charles Bridge, Prague

Charles Bridge & Prague Castle

Cross the 14th-century bridge lined with baroque statues and climb to the largest ancient castle complex in the world. St Vitus Cathedral alone is worth the trip.

20–35 min walk · tram + metro option

Wenceslas Square & New Town

Prague's grand boulevard — the National Museum, art nouveau facades, shopping and cafés. The site of the key moments of modern Czech history.

Žižkov — the Prague locals keep for themselves

Jan Žižka equestrian statue on Vítkov Hill

Vítkov Hill & the Žižka statue

Five minutes from the hotel: the hill where Jan Žižka's Hussites won their famous 1420 battle, crowned by the world's largest equestrian statue and one of the best free views of Prague.

5 min walk
Žižkov Television Tower with its crawling baby sculptures

Žižkov Television Tower

Love it or hate it, the 216 m tower with David Černý's crawling babies is unmissable. The observation deck offers a 100 km view on a clear day.

12 min walk
Historic Žižkov pedestrian tunnel under Vítkov Hill

Pubs, Akropolis & the tunnel

Žižkov claims more pubs per square metre than almost anywhere in Europe. Catch a concert at Palác Akropolis, then walk the atmospheric 1950s pedestrian tunnel under Vítkov to Karlín's cafés.

Plan by season

When are you coming?

  • Spring: Petřín hill in blossom, fewer crowds on Charles Bridge, the Prague Spring music festival in May.
  • Summer: beer gardens (Riegrovy sady is 15 minutes away), boat trips on the Vltava, open-air cinema.
  • Autumn: golden light on the Old Town, wine harvest festivals — including at the vineyards a short tram ride away.
  • Winter: the famous Christmas markets on Old Town Square, mulled wine, and Prague under snow at its most romantic.
Practical tips

Getting around

  • Most sights are walkable — comfortable shoes beat any taxi on Prague's cobbles.
